Vrai de Vert

We have just started our last week in Jinotega, and before other things start and take our attention, we are going to talk about what we do here…
We have been working in the centre preescolar, which is the local kindergarten, and which looks after about 100 children of less than 6 years old in the town of Jinotega (North of Nicaragua). At first we were meant to look after the children in the afternoon, because the teachers told us that they had a program from the ministry of education to follow in the morning….
But things in Nicaragua never go according to plan, and I guess one of the important things we have learnt is to be flexible and patient and not to expect too much. So we could have been very disappointed because in the afternoon the children sleep until 4:15 and then are still quite sleepy and then leave the school at 5 o clock, and most of them leave just after lunch. But a teacher liked what we did with the children that afternoon and told us she was ready to spare some time for us in the morning, and then we started helping the old cook to cook for all the children, and so by the end of the week we had loads to do, which is nice because we can finally feel a bit useful!
So we have been teaching the children to dance on music they had probably never heard before, we ve been doing masks with them, teaching them the hooky pooky and all that kind of basic stuff which when you have to explain to 4 years old Spanish speakers can get quite complicated! And we can also write in our CVs now that we can cook Yuka, Malaka, Chiltome, Giso, and many other tipical food! Plus, we got rid of all the dirty nappies lying next to the seesaws, and the barreled wire the children have to walk on to play football in their playground.

Ps: speaking Spanish all the time has made me forget English… it s a good thing I realize that before it s too late!
